The drug was developed as a result of the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) effort to block the enzyme called phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5), which is responsible for the degradation of cGMP in the penis. As a result of the drug, which is an antihypertensive drug, Haggerty said, he found the effects of the drug to be much more pronounced in patients with diabetes. “These patients had a higher likelihood for the drug to have an effect on blood pressure,” he said.
Haggerty also noted that while Viagra can be effective for some people, it is not an ideal choice for everyone.
